Advocacy For a More Traditional, Back to Basics Math Curriculum for K-8 in Sycamore District 427
Let me begin by explaining what this website is about.
Purpose:
www.ReformSycamoreMath.com is being created to serve as an informational resource to educate the parents and taxpayers of Sycamore School District #427 about the curriculum being used to educate our children. The focus will be on Everyday Math and Connected Math, the methods currently being taught in our grade schools and middle school, respectively. These programs have created huge controversies across our nation and are believed by many parents and experts to fail the requirement of teaching math skills to our children.
Goals:
Our ultimate goal is to change the math curriculum being used by District #427 in the grade schools and middle school. We believe that as more people become aware of and support our effort to change the curriculum, the more likely it will be met with success. We presented to our Board of Education in Sept '10. Please see Progress Updates to follow our progress.
How to use this website:
The website has been developed to enable you to develop an understanding of our point of view and the supporting evidence behind it even if you had no previous knowledge of the controversies. The Details tab will provide links to the pages which go into great detail describing the curriculum, criticisms and history. A more succinct version explaining a summary of our supporting evidence and thoughts can be found on the Summary tab. Regardless of which version you choose to read, the Testing & Standards page provides information regarding IL education in general which is critical in understanding the role of assessments in evaluating a curriculum. Please sign up for our updates if you share our concerns and wish to follow our progress.
